A standing desk can keep your heart healthy

How much time should you sit throughout the day? If you have an ordinary office job, the answer might shock you. Chances are you'll spend the vast majority of your days sitting down. That, researchers are discovering, is far from healthy. Consider a recent report from NPR. The news organization talked to a researcher at South Carolina University who completed a survey showing that men who sat more than 23 hours a week faced a 64 percent greater risk of dying from heart related illnesses than those who set under 11 hours per week.

The Good News

Want to protect yourself from potentially terminal heart related illnesses? Why not create your own standing desk? A standing desk is exactly what it sounds like, a workspace where you stand rather than sit. If you are using a standing desk for your main desk, you'll be eliminating much of those idle hours of sitting. And the best news? You'll be able to make your own standing desk with little effort and few bucks. The editors at Website Lifehacker provided a simple recipe for creating a simple, effective standing desk. Here's the quick version of it.

The Easy Way

Need a fairly easy desk for yourself? Lifehacker suggests making a standing desk with Utby legs. This will be a smaller desk, but it will give you enough room to have a monitor, keyboard and laptop. For this particular desk, you'll need a Vika Amon Top, Utby underframe, Ekby Jarpen shelf and one set of Capita legs, all of which you are able to find at Ikea for a total of about $140. According to Lifehacker, you can put this desk together simply by assembling the main desk and platform using a screwdriver.

A Bit More Complicated

Do you favor a desk with a wider top, one which offers you more room for your speakers, keyboard and monitor? Why not build a wide standing desk completely from Ikea parts? Lifehacker recommends you invest about $250 in five Vika Byske legs, one Lack shelf, two packages of Capita brackets and one Vida Amon tabletop. Then, with just help from a power drill, you are able to come up with a standing desk that includes a little more room.
